Building the Black Gate

Part one: The Gateway

Step 3:

In the next two steps we are going to decorate the gate frame.

Making_Black_Gate(19)

Cut out the Gimli Small template. Draw a 2.5cm strip onto 1mm cardboard. Copy the template onto the strip. We're going to need twelve of these Gimli Small elements. Use a ruler to improve the sketchy lines; make sure they're straight. Note that there's a red folding line in the middle.

You might want to try to copy the template by way of doing all the measurements yourself. It shouldn't be that difficult: just copy the frame-lines (i.e. the grey-coloured grid) onto the cardboard before filling in the Gimli-design. You're going to have to employ this technique anyway at the next step.

Making_Black_Gate(20)

Make the red line incisions with the aid of a ruler before you start cutting out the individual elements. As for cutting: we prefer to use a hobby knife instead of scissors. Don't forget to remove the little V-incision at the top of the elements.

Making_Black_Gate(21)

Bend the Gimli elements completely by pushing both halves against each other. Take care that both halves coincide exactly (or as much as possible as cardboard seems to have a will of its own…).

In the same manner, cut two Gimli Large elements from 1mm cardboard.

Making_Black_Gate(22)

Next, glue the Gimli elements onto the base of the door frame. The top of each element must rest in a 'valley'; both wings need to be placed about three quarters 'uphill'. Study the pictures to get it right. We have marked the positions of the Gimli Large elements with pink markings. From left to right the sequence for the left door of the gateway should be:

s - s - s - s - L - s - s - s - s - s - s - L - s - s

(Note that it's the other way round for the right door of the gateway).

Making_Black_Gate(23)

Take care that both Gimli wings are sufficiently placed in a V-shape. If necessary, use a cocktail-stick to improve the position of the wings by pushing them outwards. Also, verify the vertical stand of the gate frame from time to time: these Gimli elements should touch the ground (more or less…). Make sure they keep ranks as well.

Making_Black_Gate(24)

Mask the incisions in the cardboard of the Gimli elements by using 0.6cm strips of painter's tape.

Making_Black_Gate(25)

Cut out two Gimli Nose elements from 2mm cardboard. Also, produce eight tiny spikes from a match. By studying the template and the picture, you'll find out how it's done.

Making_Black_Gate(26)

Glue the 'Noses' onto both Gimli Large elements before you glue both sets of four spikes (you'll have to study the pictures to understand about their exact positions). Add some extra glue to the surface of the spikes to strengthen the splintery matchwood.
