III. 'Four Mighty Piers'
And then the arduous job of jazzing up the tower faces commenced. Our primary aim was to finish the decoration of the first of the four main faces. All sixteen faces having a more or less identical look, completing just one of them would give us a better idea about the scope of the entire project.
We used some home-made templates to produce the lower fins, cutting them from a 1mm cardboard sheet…
… and gluing them upright onto the MDF.
A small strip of MDF was kept in place between the first two segments to ensure a linear alignment of the fins; it was removed as soon as the position of both segments became (semi-) fixed.
The sculpting of these eighty-eight small MDF pegs proved to be a time-consuming activity. When we built our first version of Orthanc we had used halves of clothes-pegs because of their similarity. Now we had to sculpt our own pegs at a scale of 1 : 4.
Small strips of painter's tape were wrapped around the window arches, to imitate the thickening around the arch-bases.
