The Making of Orthanc

Endless series of 0.2cm cardboard strips were cut to size and glued in vertical patterns, interrupted by horizontal tiers. Four MDF horns were added to the panels. Once completed, every segment was glued to its predecessor.

Once in a while we would have a dry run to admire our progress. With all these little titbits lining up as far as our eye would see, we could lovingly stare for hours at our fancy work.

And on we went. Up! Up we go, hobbitses! Ever and again we would run up against these cornices, which were limiting every level of the building. We used cardboard strips and filler to give shape to these 'lean-to'-like bands. In time, we would have to complete all these cornice bands as they were making closed circuits around the polygonal tower shaft.

Seen at close quarters, it didn't quite look like a great work of art. Our only worry was to keep all strips perfectly vertical and perfectly parallel to each other. We were confident that small irregularities would disappear in the bigger picture later on. As always, the future was looking black in that respect.

Talking about the future: the window with its sloping ledge was a foretaste of what was awaiting us higher up.

Far from the madding crowd we squandered our summer afternoons on cutting and gluing, our concentration confined to a square inch and our thoughts roaming far, far away... (What's this? A lotrscenerybuilder getting lyrical?)

For variety's sake we added some toothpicks as well.
