Saruman's Stronghold
The Making of Orthanc
© Lotrscenerybuilder 2010
There wasn't much variation in our work: either a strip was glued in a horizontal position or in a vertical position. But that suited us fine. On the Black Gate, producing the individual decorations had been much more demanding. In comparison, Orthanc was just a collection of 2mm cardboard strips, held together by a few panels of MDF.
A smaller window was cut into the corner-strip.
Ready-made canopies crowned the window's arches.
And still no pinnacle within sight.
We ended up with a kind of chimney shaft, with a beautiful geometrical pattern of lines and stripes on the one side and a smooth red emptiness on the other. It had taken us many hours to come this far. Now we had to produce a twin tower.
"Is this it? Is this all you can conjure, Saruman?"
